The Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus, Podgorica, Montenegro

Completed in 1969 and designed by Zvonimir Vrkljan, the Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus is the only Catholic church in Podgorica, mainly serving the Catholic Albanian population of the city; it was built on the grounds of a Catholic church destroyed by Allied bombing in World War II, and was the additionally the only church built in the era (worldsbymaria). Although Catholicism is not popular in Montenegro, this church symbolized the minority Albanian community that lived in Podgorica.

This Podgorica church has characteristics of classic brutalism; for once, it is almost singular in exterior color, a pale, stoney sand-gray. The design incorporates straight edges in triangles and rectangles, as well as the cuts on the walls. Contrary to Catholic tradition, this church utilizes function over form and is efficiently and cheaply built, mainly of concrete. The exterior was initially meant to resemble a ship, but unfortunately, it was not finished (Kathmandu & Beyond).
